I was on a business trip this morning when I received a call from a stranger. After listening carefully, I learned it was Mr. Liu, who needed folded instruction labels and got my contact information through a friend’s referral.
Since my location at the time was not far from his company, I took the opportunity to drop by Mr. Liu’s office to check the physical samples.
It turned out that Mr. Liu’s sample was indeed a folded instruction label, but it was slightly different from the ones we usually produce.
Our company actually made a white sample of a similar folded instruction label for another client back in June. The craftsmanship is complex, and it can’t be fully completed by machines—The first process requires manual operation and has low efficiency.
Given that we already have experience with similar processes, we know this craft is not highly efficient. We were worried that we might fail to meet the delivery deadline, which would disappoint the client and delay their shipment. So, I explained all the processes and workflows to him frankly. I suggested that we could assist with the machine-completed parts, but he should find people to handle the manual part himself. This way, he could better control the delivery time, as we simply don’t have enough manpower for the manual work.
Mr. Liu was very touched. Instead of taking the order without hesitation just because the complex process might bring higher profits—only to argue and shirk responsibility later when we couldn’t meet the deadline—we were upfront with him. We even pointed out that he could profit from the manual part if he handled it himself.
